St Peter’s Basilica is an iconic example of Renaissance architecture and one of the holiest Catholic shrines in the world. This incredible feat of engineering is built upon the burial site of St. Peter the Apostle (the first Bishop of Rome), the man who is regarded as the first Pope. Nestled in the heart of the Vatican city, its huge dome can be seen for miles and its story is known by many across the globe.

This conversation will discuss the origins of St. Peter’s Basilica and the first construction at the time of Emperor Constantine. We’ll learn about the different projects proposed for this (at the time) new and magnificent Renaissance basilica and the final accepted proposal by one of the greatest masters of all times: Michelangelo. We will also spend some time talking about the transformations that took place in the 17th century, such as the Protestant Reformation and Bernini’s artworks. We’ll look in detail at these masterpieces from the square to the Baldacchino and, of course, the main altar.

Participants will experience the sense of being inside the Basilica, immersing themselves in the beauty of the design and arts of this formidable structure. Led by Francesca Barberini, an art historian specialized in Renaissance and Baroque art, this interactive seminar will lead us into the heart of the Vatican and one of the holiest places in Rome.

Francesca is an art historian with a degree in modern and contemporary art from the Sapienza University of Rome. She specialized in the art and culture of the Baroque period and in decorative arts, subjects on which she has published several essays. Her publications include a book on the Holy Years in Rome in the XVIIth century and a book on cameos engravers in Rome in the XIXth century. She has been a licensed guide since 2001 and leads itineraries all over Rome, a city she truly loves. She is also an official guide of the Vatican Museums and Vatican City.
