The historic Rialto market is the culinary, economic, and social heart of Venetian life, where locals buy their seafood, meat, and produce daily amid the colorful stalls that line the Grand Canal. Join food expert and sommelier Cecilia Sitran to learn about the Rialto Market, the historic hub of trading and commerce in Venice. We’ll learn about the evolution of the market, hear about seasonal ingredients, local wines and also get to know some typical recipes.

An important market since its origins over one thousand years ago, Rialto Market is still an active and busy daily trading spot. Strategically located along the Grand Canal and at the foot of the Rialto Bridge, the market is still divided as it has been for centuries with specific areas for fish, produce, meat and spices. Surrounded by small shops and wine bars, it is also a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

In this seminar, we will learn about several simple but delicious local recipes made with fresh regional ingredients from the land and the sea. We will discover the tradition of sipping an ombra, what Venetians call a very small glass of wine in the local dialect, which is enjoyed with a variety of tasty snacks known as cicchetti.

Led by a food expert and sommelier, Cecilia Sitran, this interactive seminar will focus on Venetian culinary history and traditions. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased curiosity about traditional dishes from the Venetian lagoon and how to pair them with local wines.

After her degree in Economics of Art and Culture at the University of Venice, Cecilia Sitran studied for two years to obtain her diploma of Sommelier. She has worked in one of the most prestigious wine shops in Venice. She has also completed a master's in the South of France on organic wines. As a freelance sommelier, she shares her Venetian roots while tasting local wines surrounded by the beauty of Venice. She teaches cooking courses in Venice that combine fresh ingredients and wine aromas. In 2020 Cecilia studied for the globally recognized Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2, successfully passed with distinction. At present Cecilia leads wine courses for few American Military bases in Italy.
