Join us to discover Segovia: Roman city, Medieval trading center, and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with art historian Marta Lopez Beriso we will explore the mighty Roman aqueduct running through the center of the city and learn about important Jewish and Christian religious architecture and find out how different faiths co-existed here through the centuries.

Starting with the world-famous aqueduct, an impressive example of Roman engineering, we will explore the ancient origins of Segovia. Supplying water to the city until the twentieth century, this structure is a part of daily life here even today. Spanning a valley between two hills, it brought water from nearby Guadarrama to feed the growing city, cited in ancient Roman texts as an important trading hub. We will learn how the aqueduct was constructed and how it was used.

Next, we will discover the Romanesque churches of San Millan or San Esteban and the Gothic Castilian noble palaces built in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Inside the walls of the fortified city, Christians cohabitated peacefully for centuries with a large and powerful Jewish community. However, in the sixteenth century, the Jewish quarter was partially engulfed by the construction of the massive Segovia Cathedral. We will explore these architectural marvels and the context in which they were erected.

We will end our exploration at the Alcazar, a royal palace built and rebuilt on top of a Roman fortified area at the opposite side of the aqueduct, with a breathtaking view over the rocky river valley below, dotted with monasteries, churches, and agricultural land.

Led by an expert on Spanish history and art, Marta Lopez Beriso, this interactive seminar will explore the history of Segovia from Roman times to today. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the city and its history.
