San Francisco is a place where one technology has constantly replaced another technology. Each technology is an innovation: whether that is a device (iPhone) or a set of values ("The Summer of Love") or San Francisco's cable car. These innovations remain a part of the City, in a brand-like manner, a consciousness identified with San Francisco. They are on t-shirts, hats, logos, and part of popular songs.

In this conversation, we will look at San Francisco's historical past up until today, learning how new innovations are built upon past innovations. The city was founded as a colonial outpost for a monarchy, but three centuries later it is a democracy. In the natural world, the hills of San Francisco are formed from silica skeletons of Jurassic ocean plankton. How does this affect the Now? If you live on one of these hills, it is less likely that you (or your house!) will be adversely affected by any of the historic earthquakes that have threatened the City in the past.

Led by an expert on San Francisco's recent and natural histories, John Graham, this interactive seminar allows the observer to apply these themes to each of our ÌÕstopsÌÒ throughout our conversation. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a unique and original way to address the geography, architecture, and historic narrative of San Francisco.

John Graham is a visual artist, writer, and oral historian. He earned his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of California at Santa Barbara
