Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is now one of Europe’s most dynamic wine regions, producing some of the most exciting labels in Italy. This seminar is designed as an introduction to Sicily’s mosaic of wines, its long wine culture, its unique geography, its climate, and recent innovation in the industry. Participants will come away from this introductory tasting with a good understanding of the exciting developments that have been taking place in Sicily in the last few decades.

During the seminar, we will survey the history of the island’s viticulture, starting back in the eighth century B.C., looking at the wines that have been its pride for centuries, (such as Muscats and Malvasias). Of course, we will also look at its Nero D’avola, one of the island’s most important native red varieties which has gained international fame. We will look at the factors that have turned Sicily into the third-largest wine-producing region of Italy and one of the most emerging wine centers in the world.

In addition to discussing native red and wine varietals and the terroirs in which they are grown, our conversation will also cover Sicilian winemakers’ experimentations with non-native grapes such as Chardonnay, Syrah, and others, which have produced very distinctive results. We will top up our wine journey with a guided tasting of a red and white Sicilian wine from different estates, during which we will also learn about the fundamentals of wine and food pairings.

Led by the wine ad food expert Daniela Mendola, this interactive seminar will explore the world of Sicilian wine. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased information and appreciation for Sicilian wines and for the historical and geographical context that led to their birth.

Daniela Mendola lives in Palermo, Sicily and works as a certified guide and tour director across Italy. She has a degree in International Political Science and an MA in Tourism Management. Daniela is also a certified Wine and Food Expert. She received her Sommelier Certification in 2012 through the Associazione Italiana Sommelier, and specialized in International Wine Teaching Method in 2015 (Worldwide Sommelier Association). She continued her studies to become a certified Pastry and Commis Chef (Italian Gambero Rosso Academy). She collaborates with various Sicilian wineries, and leads wine and food tours in Sicily.
