I regret that Dr. Stasiowski was not with me when I visited the Siena Cathedral. But the next best experience is her incredibly enlightening tour of the floor mosaics. She captured my full attention from her first words and took me on a journey of weaving the marvelous mosaics in the regional historical context. Dr. Stasiowski’s knowledge of art history is astounding. I learned so much.
A very interesting and informative discussion about the gorgeous floor of the Siena Cathedral. The powerpoint presentation was well done. I am not sure if she needed to write out the comments for so many objects. Just hearing it was enough. Also, Dr. Stasiowski talks so fast.
One could probably spend a lifetime diving into every detail of the intricate, beautiful, mysterious marble floor of the Siena Cathedral. Dr. Stasiowski's selections of which panels to focus on for our talk (which seemed to go by in the blink of an eye!) were just perfect.
She enlightened us on the contrasting nature of the scenes depicted in the floor, as well as so much of the legend of the city of Siena itself. I loved learning about the combination of Pagan/Classical figures and symbolism that are championed within the structure that represents the very heart of Christian faith to the Sienese. Everything was brilliantly tied together with relation to the philosophy and writing of the day, highlighting the concept that something could exist as two contrasting ideas at once. This felt all the more appropriate given the existence of the Piccolomini Library WITHIN THE DUOMO ITSELF!
As someone with a background in art history who has seen the marble floors in person - but never fully understood their meaning - I especially appreciated Dr. Stasiowski's literary references and interpretations to the scenes depicted on the floor. It was clear that many art historians still find the meaning behind many of these panels to be a mystery - so to hear her reading through the lens of literature and philosophy was brilliant and innovative! I also loved that as a participant I was invited and encouraged to think of my own interpretation. Dr. Stasiowski's talk left me feeling inspired and wanting to learn even more about these beautiful and mysterious floors!
My friend and I are avid travelers but due to the constraints of COVID-19, we decided to continue our love for 'visiting' the wonders and sights of other countries by attending a webinar. This was the first time we experimented with this style of learning. We thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. It was insightful, educational and inspiring. Dr. Stasiowski was a great 'tour guide'. She was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and a pleasure to listen to. Thanks so much!
put your thinking cap on - there is much more to a cathedral floor than meets the eye ! from sheer artistic/ artisanal rendering to the philosophical / mystical interpretations Dr. Stasiowski takes us on an expedited journey up the Monte della Sapienza, introducing us to sibyls, philosophers and biblical types along the way. Fun and stimulating , this was a surprising and informative encounter with a seldom revealed element of Siena's Duomo.
