When we hear the words "Sistine Chapel", our minds might immediately turn to think of Renaissance master Michelangelo and the famous Creation of Adam. This conversation with a local Roman art historian and educator aims to unpick the narrative of the Sistine Chapel in greater detail, looking beyond Michelangelo. The large expanse is covered almost entirely with frescoes, the result of a project that was carried out by three Popes over a period of 75 years. We'll discuss Pope Sixtus the IV, Pope Julius II, and Pope Paul III and the various artists who were commissioned during their times from Sandro Botticelli to Pinturicchio.

Looking at the diverse range of Sistine Chapel frescoes together we will realize that Michelangelo's ceiling is merely one chapter of this impressive book of faith. If we don't know anything about the rest, it's almost impossible to piece together this magical Renaissance puzzle.

Join art historian Cecilia Martini for an analysis of the Sistine Chapel in this interactive seminar. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, we'll emerge together with a deeper appreciation of this Renaissance masterpiece and the history of the artists.

Cecilia is an art historian and a native Roman with a Master's degree in Medieval and Renaissance art from the Sapienza University of Rome. Although her specialty is painting and decorative arts, she has a broad knowledge of the history of Rome and a personal passion for ancient history, which she shares on many antiquity-themed itineraries. Cecilia has worked actively in the past as a lecturer, teacher, and curator of exhibitions. She had been a staff member of the didactive service of the Vatican Museums, the Galleria Doria Pamphili, and the Galleria Colonna where she still frequently consults. As a licensed guide for Rome and Florence and with a specialized teaching degree, she has more than 20 years of experience in leading highly-qualified tours.

We would love to visit the Sistine Chapel again, thanks to Cecilia's inputs. They were fresh, learned and kept us engaged for the full hour. Wish it had been longer !

Incredible Opportunity to Learn about the Sistine Chapel in-Depth

I have visited the Sistine Chapel many times over the past 35 years and continue to find it fascinating. Cecilia Martini did such a fantastic job of bringing even more information to light. Her talk was so engaging and thorough. If you visit the Sistine Chapel, it is often very busy and it is difficult to take it all in during the short amount of time you have in there. Cecilia Martini's talk would be an incredible thing to have done prior to actually going so you really have the information and can enjoy being there. And, if you have been before, this talk provides an excellent opportunity to learn more and to revisit a very special place. It was truly a presentation that is not to be missed!

After seeing it before and after the restoration and "seeing it 3 times as a youth, middle age an...

Well-organized and well-thought-out presentation. And yes, she makes it exciting.

Sistine Chapel in Depth

Very informative, art historian told us how to “read” the paintings in the Sistine Chapel, can’t wait to visit Italy and see it “in person.”
