Why is champagne so expensive? What is the difference between champagne, crémant, cava, and prosecco? What should I look for on a label? How long should I keep a bottle? Which sparkling wine should I use in a cocktail? What food should I serve with it? Where can I buy good value-for-money sparkling wines?

There are numerous questions that deserve an answer, and this conversation hopes to do just that. For the eager travelers who love to taste sparkling wines, or are looking for more affordable options than the Veuve Clicquot, this seminar is the perfect opportunity to learn more about this (often) unfamiliar world.

We’ll cover a number of topics during our time together. We’ll start by learning the six different methods of making sparkling wine. We’ll discuss the countries and regions that make and produce sparkling wines, as well as learning about the variety in grapes. We’ll note the various factors that affect the quality, style, and price and we’ll finish up with some tips on how to buy, store, and serve wine. And naturally, we’ll leave participants with some suggestions on which food goes best with which type of sparkling wine.

Designed to inform wine-lovers and budding sommeliers, this interactive seminar will give participants the tools to explore the world of sparkling wines with more confidence. Led by wine educator, guide, and longtime Paris resident Cynthia Coutu, participants will emerge with a greater understanding of this intriguing segment of the wine world.

Cynthia is Canadian and has been living in Paris for more than 25 years. She obtained a B.A. in Fine Arts (Photography) in Canada, then came to France to do a Masters in Art History at the Sorbonne. Her love of wine and cheese kept her in France. She studied wine at L’Académie du Vin and L’École du Vin, and is certified Wine and Spirits Education Trust Level 3 with Merit. She then specialised in champagne - the king of wines and the wines of kings! She teaches champagne masterclasses, judges wine contests, hosts champagne tasting events, and loves taking people to visit her favourite champagne producers. She was voted Best Wine Tasting in Paris by Expatriates Magazine. She is currently researching the role of women in the history of Champagne for a book project.
