Germany is a new country but made up of ancient parts. As of 2021, Germany is now 150 years old, making it 95 years younger than the USA. Famously the nation was founded by the brilliant and Machiavellian Otto von Bismarck whose forging of this new country changed the face of global politics forever. But few today really understand exactly how or why it happened. This conversation offers an examination of how Germany was born, looking at the major events, personalities and ideas from the Congress of Vienna to the Franco-Prussian war.

In this seminar, we will examine the history, politics, and ideology that united the separate German lands together to create a new superstate. We will look at the story of how the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire during the Napoleonic wars and the humiliation of French occupation directly led to the growth of national feeling amongst the Germans. A feeling that would only grow after the perceived failings of the Congress of Vienna before it erupted into revolution in 1848 and create a national parliament in Frankfurt based on the dream of a united Germany.

However, a dream is all that it would remain, as the reactionary leaders of the German states soon crushed this nascent state and we will see how this failure influenced the man who would ultimately succeed in his task of unification. Lastly, we will discuss the motives of the “Iron Chancellor”, Otto von Bismarck, in creating Germany and how he skilfully glued together thirty-nine independent states through a complex mix of politics, war, idealism, and Realpolitik.

Led by an expert on German history, Tom Mills, this interactive seminar will explore the complex birth of the German state. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how Germany was born through blood and Iron.

Tom Mills was born in Wolverhampton in the heart of England before studying History and Archaeology at Bangor University. Emerging with an MA he worked as an archaeologist and afterward a historic conservator for the National Trust. Moving to Munich in 2012 he began a career as a tour guide and many years later is still there.

Tom covered the period of German history from the Napoleonic era to the unification of Germany in the 1870's, with an emphasis on culture and society, revolution and war. The final part of the talk on Bismarck was particularly interesting. The seminar provided a great overview of key moments in German history.
