Introducing the best of Medieval and Renaissance art and monuments in the beautiful northern Italian city of Verona. Art historian Susan Steer explores the treasures of this vibrant city.
Looped by the Adige River with a backdrop of green hills and snow-capped mountains, Verona is one of North Italy’s most beautiful cities. As well as its impressive Roman monuments, Verona boasts a medieval castle, now an art museum, monumental squares, Romanesque and Gothic churches, and picturesque palazzi still painted with vibrant frescoes. Although Verona is deservedly famous for its Roman heritage and as the setting of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, this seminar will instead concentrate on Verona’s abundance of Medieval and Renaissance art and monuments, like the tombs of its Scaliger rulers, the spectacular frescoes in gothic churches like Sant’Anastasia and San Fermo, and the Romanesque San Zeno with its unparalleled altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna.
Led by an expert on Italian Medieval and Renaissance art, Dr. Susan Steer, this interactive seminar will introduce Verona’s most important monuments and artworks dating from the period 1100-1600. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the art of northern Italy and a great desire to visit or return to this beautiful and still vibrant city.
