One of the most hated women of her time, Wallis Simpson changed the course of British History. Her love story with the heir to the English throne was scandalous and led to extreme consequences. In this conversation, we will analyze how this woman navigated high society and used her sense of style as a weapon and as protective armor.

Bessie Wallis Warfield was born into the poor branch of a wealthy family in 1896. Raised in Baltimore, she mixed in high society without the financial means to do so. Soon, she understood that fashion was a way to be noticed. Using her mother's sewing skills, Wallis created outfits that would stand out in social events.

In 1934, her life changes forever when she begins a love affair with Edward, Prince of Wales. This affair would lead to the end of her marriage to Ernest Simpson and Edward's abdication as King of England. As the wife of an ex-king, Wallis turns to fashion as armor, to protect herself.

"I'm not a beautiful woman. I'm nothing to look at, so the only thing I can do is to dress better than anyone else"- Wallis Simpson.

In this seminar, art historian Estela Mendes will help us look at Wallis’s life through the lens of fashion and analyze how she developed her unique personal style from hair to clothing and ultimately through one of the most fabulous jewelry collections in the world.

Estela Mendes is a Portuguese art historian, with a master’s in museum studies. She has worked in both Portugal and the UK, leading tours for more than 15 years both in education departments in museums and with tourist groups.
